WIP Moodboard for Printdesign

WIP Moodboard for Printdesign

An afternoon of playing with blues - WIP Moodbard ...a trip to Shoreham beach yesterday presented a moody blue colorpalette as the mists settled over the sea. It's good to be back in Britain and get stuck into some new printdesign ideas for surfacepattern collection.

Surface Pattern Design Trend - Earthed

Exploring the Surface Pattern Design Trend - Earthed

III milliande de III Earthed Trend Moodboard Textile Design and Surface Pattern Skeleton Leaves

This time of the year yields a variety of leaf remnants in varying stages of decay ... sometimes I have to rummage through a big pile of wet , half moldy leaves to find a little skeleton treasure sheltering itself against a piece of bark.

Inspired by the idea of skeleton leaves remaining behind for a long time after the initial leaf parts have departed, a kind of hanging on to the framework of life left behind.

Inspirational Words for this Moodboard Theme of " EARTHED" are :

Transparency
Fragility
Decayed
Skeletal
Passage of Time
Marks left Behind

Exploring Pen and Ink Drawings with a dital white overlay to simulate the extended layers perceived . Wholes made up out of parts, parts combined, layered appear to distort origin.
An interesting avenue to play for some time with.

To me there is a feeling of geometry, construction behind all the designs nature has at her disposal. A graphic building blocks kind of a feeling which I hope to explore a little more ... here some first impressions of resonance on this theme

And as for earthy colorpalettes, this guy was proudly displaying jimself at the evolutionary anthropoly at the National History Museum in London ... the blanks of the skull structure where filled in with a manmade compound... a kind of skeletal help that preserves the rest to be observed in situ.
Again the notion of stories that are being told when only the skeletal structures remain... stories of time passing, stories of life being lived in the presence of natures forces.

Another avenue of explorations for me is to look closer, getting out my microscope to look at the underlying structures that often get missed by the naked eye. Whole worlds open up in a tiny dish or on the surface edge of a little leaf.

It intriqued me how many different earth tones could be spotted on the tiny little sand grains that clang to the fragment of a bird wing skeleton here.

The tonal ranges of january's decay stay away from the warm autumnal hues and enter a distinctively colder palettes that seem to be imbued with an underlying midnight blue.

Textures that invite a certain tactileness , nature offering a jumping off point for many designers with its rich intricate layers telling stories of time passing ...

I look forward to seeing where this journey will take me ...

Surface Pattern design seems to have thoroughly tugged at my heartstrings .

Timer 25 Sketchbook Studies - Day 6

Milliande Timer 25 Sketchbook Studies - Day 6

Milliande Timer 25 Sketchbook Studies - Day 6

Tips

- I purposefully work with pen and ink, no pencil, only concentrate on outline shapes that i see when I squint my eyes
- get the basic shapes down in varying sizes depending on inspiration images
- try and combine them to create new motifs
- the time limit stops me from fussing, makes me look for the next line and only the essence of a shape

- If i did not set the time and the intention to complete the page I would mull over every angle and every detail too long
- after timer is up I allow 5 more minutes for shading... then it HAS TO BE DONE !! and I move on

The other thing is I guess, these are not intended to be finished motifs or even ideas, simply just mindful line wanderings as it were... they may or may not lead to an idea, but in essence they are just warm up doodles, so no expectation
 .. hope this helps

Watercolor Field Journal :
We love Art Journaling on the road , keeping a Watercolor Nature Sketchbook whenever we stop and lately we have been concentrating on nature studies both of the botanical beauty we encounter, looking closer at all the different parts of a plant and noticing feathers , fur and animal encounters along the way ...
